LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. – Motorists might encounter brief traffic stoppages and travel delays during weekday off-peak periods at the New Hope-Lambertville Toll -Supported Bridge (a.k.a. “the free bridge”) for the next three weeks , the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.
The daytime travel restrictions are enabling a Commission contractor to remove the temporary work platform that was installed below the bridge’s roadway deck in late November. The platform consisting of cables and corrugated-steel panels allowed electricians to replace short-circuiting electrical junction boxes at multiple locations across the bridge. The repair work ended last week, putting the bridge’s new color-programmable LED architectural lighting system back in full working order.
The work of disassembling the temporary work platform began yesterday. Moving forward, the bridge’s road deck will be reduced to a single lane with traffic alternating in each direction for varying durations occurring between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.
Motor-vehicle travel impacts are expected to be minor. Bridge motorists are urged to reduce speeds, follow flagger instructions, and exercise caution when travel restrictions are in effect.
The weekday flagging operations for work-platform-removal activities currently are expected to end by March 13. Inclement weather, emergencies, and other factors can affect this schedule.
