EASTON, PA – Travel restrictions will resume next week for the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission’s I-78 Bridges and Approach Slabs Rehabilitation Project, the Commission announced today.
The project entails bridge approach slab replacements at eight approach structures (relatively short-distance overpass/underpass type bridges), cleaning and painting at six approach and overpass structures, and an assortment of other tasks, including restriping the Commission’s I-78 roadway segments flanking the I-78 Toll Bridge across the Delaware River at the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border.  Work is expected to be completed this autumn.
Next week’s schedule of project-related lane closures is as follows:
I-78 Westbound – From milepost 0.5 before the Carpentersville Road overpass bridge in New Jersey west to milepost 77.2 in Pennsylvania after the I -78 approach bridge across PA Route 611
  • Overnight single-lane travel pattern (two westbound lanes closed) – 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (next day)  Tuesday, April 3, to Thursday, April 5;
  • 57-hour long single-lane travel pattern (two westbound lanes closed) – 10 p.m. Friday, April 6 to 7 a.m. Monday, April 9;

I-78 Eastbound – From milepost 76.3 opposite Toll Plaza in Pennsylvania to milepost 0.5 after Carpentersville Road overpass in New Jersey

  • Night-time single-lane travel pattern (two eastbound lanes closed) – 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, to 1 a.m. Wednesday, April 4;
  • Continuous two-lane travel pattern (one eastbound lane closed) – beginning 1 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, and continuing until further notice.
The travel restrictions listed above are subject to change due to weather, emergency, traffic, and project mobilization considerations.   Motorists are urged to allow extra time for reaching their destinations, to reduce speeds, and to exercise caution when travelling through project work areas.
Five additional continuous, weekend-long, single-lane restricted travel periods are expected to be implemented this spring to allow for completion of I-78 slab replacement work at the toll bridge, the approach bridge across PA Route 611 and for later slab replacements in the area of the approach bridges across County Route 519 in Pohatcong, N.J. and an on-ramp to I-78 eastbound at the interchange for Routes 22 and 173 (exit 3) outside Phillipsburg, N.J.
Because of the increased likelihood of backups and delays arising when the 57-hour-long single-lane travel patterns along westbound I-78 are in effect, affected motorists are urged to consider adjusting their planned travel times, using other travel routes and/or allowing extra time to reach destinations.
(The Commission plans to issue further periodic travel alerts to advise motorists of scheduled project-related travel restrictions as construction activities continue this year.  The NJ511 travel alert system also will be utilized as warranted to advise motorists of the construction-related lane closures.)
