DRJTBC - Current Projects

Trenton-Morrisville Toll Bridge Rehabilitation and One Auxiliary Northbound Lane

The DRJTBC is conducting a major rehabilitation of the Trenton-Morrisville Toll Bridge and its respective approach structures and roadways. The bridge carries Route 1 over the Delaware River between Trenton, New Jersey and Morrisville, Pennsylvania. Project elements include rehabilitating and widening the bridge to accommodate a northbound auxiliary lane, improving the interchange at South Pennsylvania Avenue in Morrisville, constructing a new bridge over NJ Route 29 to improve access to that highway, and building a new toll-collection plaza on the bridge's Pennsylvania side.  The entire three-year-project is to be substantially completed in late 2009.

I-95 / Scudder Falls Bridge Improvement Project

The DRJTBC has been making preparations for the I-95/Scudder Falls Bridge Improvement Project for more than five years.  It is shaping up to be the largest construction project in the Commission's nearly 75-year history.  The project area will extend 4.4 miles along I-95 from PA Route 332 in Bucks County, Pa. to Bear Tavern Road in Mercer County, N.J.  and it will include a complete replacement of the existing four-lane Scudder Falls Bridge over the Delaware River. The project is needed to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety on the bridge and approach roadways.  A 2000 study attributed the bridge's congestion and safety problems to its narrow configuration and close proximity of adjoining interchanges.  The current bridge was the most heavily used span in 2007, carrying an average 58,400 cars and trucks a day.  Traffic volumes are projected to rise an additional 35 percent by the year 2030.

Milford-Montague Toll Bridge Rehabilitation

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission is undertaking a rehabilitation of the Milford-Montague Toll Bridge. The bridge connects U.S. Routes 6 and 209 in Milford Township, Pa. with Route 206 in Montague, N.J. The bridge is 1,150 feet in length and the total project length is approximately 4,600 feet long. The bridge and the approach roadways are being rehabilitated to mitigate the need for major repairs for at least 15 years. Project work includes: rehabilitation of the bridge structure and approach roadways, construction of a new toll-collection facility, and replacement of the shoulders on both of the bridge's approach roadways.

I-78 Open Road Tolling

The Commission is working to implement open road tolling (ORT) at its I-78 crossing. Under ORT, E-ZPass users will have the option of paying their tolls at highway speeds.  ORT customers would pass under a gantry of high-speed transponder readers, avoiding the necessity of slowing down or stopping. The Commission has retained HNTB Corp. to develop a concept study report and plans for constructing ORT lanes at I-78 by examining alternative lane configurations at the existing toll plaza in Williams Township, Pa.

Interstate 78 Toll Bridge Roadway Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation work on the I-78 Toll Bridge's 4.2-mile approach roadway in Warren County, N.J. began in October 2007.  This project is addressing premature cracking of the concrete roadways slabs and settlement of the roadway due to the heavy truck traffic that uses the I-78 corridor every day.  Additionally, sink holes that are common to this region of New Jersey are being filled and stabilized beneath the roadbed.  Severely deteriorated concrete slabs are being replaced.  When the slab stabilization and suturing work is done, the surface will be given a new, smooth asphalt coating. Ramp improvements at the Still Valley Interchange (Exit 3) also are being conducted with this project.  The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2009.
