The recently upgraded walkway along the upstream side of the Northampton Street Bridge (Easton-Phillipsburg “free bridge”) is expected to be open for public use on weekends starting Saturday, Jan. 21.
The walkway was closed last fall to allow for installation of a new improved decking material as part of an 18-month-long rehabilitation project now taking place at the bridge. The new walkway should be safer and have a longer service life.
The upstream walkway will continue to be closed on weekdays to allow for electrical and architectural lighting work now taking place at the bridge. The bridge’s downstream walkway, which was upgraded earlier in the rehabilitation project, remains open at all times.
Weekend openings of the upstream walkway are to continue until further notice.
